Directorate General of Private Education Institutions (DGPEI) (Özel Öğretim Kurumları Genel Müdürlüğü –ÖÖKGM) is one of the main body of Ministry of National Education in Turkiye. The Directorate General is responsible for the conduct of all kinds of regulations, audits, and training activities, for every levels of the formal and non-formal private educations institutions which have been run by non-governmental bodies or real persons. DGPEI has been working on developing and conducting regulations and education programs, curricula for the education institutions as well. The Directorate General is also authorized to open, close, or inspect those education institutions.

In 2020 - 2021 Academic Year, according to the statistics of the Ministry of National Education, there are 13,870 schools, of which 5,655 pre-school, 1,982 primary school, 2,351 lower secondary school and 3,882 Lower secondary (high) schools are affiliated to the General Directorate of Private Education Institutions. Totally, 1.468.198 students have been attained to all those schools in Turkiye. On the other hand, non-formal private education institutions are also affiliated to the General Directorate of Private Education Institution which have been conducted training activities in terms of lifelong learning. Directorate General of Private Education Institutions develop their education program (curriculum) or conduct approval procedure for them when are submitted by non-formal private education intuitions including such as vocational and technical education centers. As it is mentioned above, DGPEI works in more than one field of education and training. For example, private dormitories in Turkiye is also affiliated to DGPEI, Private Institutions/courses providing language training are also subject to DGPEI. Education activities of all kind of private schools and educational institutions at different levels in terms of the planning, coordination and management in Turkiye are under responsibility of DGPEI.

To be participated as a reliable partner or to be contributed by DGPEI, types of the projects in the field of education or the areas are STEM, Vocational Education and Training, teacher trainings, training and education of disables, enrolment of lifelong learning, training of drivers and traffic for road safety, teaching of science, industry and technology, sustainable development, global warming, health, security, environment, culture, agriculture, energy, foreign languages etc. in Europeanization dimension.

In 2019, Department of Projects, Research, Development established within the DGPEI to develop outreaching project for comprehensive collaborations. DGPEI (OOGKM) will play a role in the integration of private education institutions and vocational education institutions into the project. It will also provide access to statistical information on educational institutions across the country. It will also be responsible for issuing legislation on special education institutions. DGPEI (OOGKM) regulates the certification process of the individuals and issue the legislation in the relevant fields. DGPEI (OOGKM) is authority as an accreditation body of the all kinds of private education institutions. First Erasmus+ Ongoing Project is below: KA2 VOC OF DRIVERS 2019-1-TR01-K202-074813 (Traffic Safety, Preparing updated curricula for driver instructors in private courses etc.)
